I never thought I would see the day, but it's true, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is now free-to-play. Valve is injecting more life into CS:GO as if playing de_dust2 isn't enough for players haha. It's amazing to see this game go free-to-play and now no one has any excuse but to try it out.
Awesome tournament once again. Unfortunately this time around I could only catch the games on Saturday, the semis and the grand final. The Friday replays were awesome.
Steam was integrated with Twitch so that you could watch the stream on Twitch (dreamhackcsgo) and get some drops. Picking the winners in the pools by buying stickers was a clever move. What's cool about that is that it contributes to the prize pool of the tournament. I like that you can use the stickers after the tournament too. The NiP (Ninjas in Pyjamas) sticker is going on my favourite pistol, the Five-Seven.
The grand final was between NiP and LCDC and it went to overtime, very close and LCDC won it in the end. The maps were Dust2, Inferno, Overpass. I haven't seen Overpass in a tournament setting and it's great to see the strategies for it. But it seemed like the predominant strategy for Overpass was to head to site A and then smoke/flash as much as possible and get picks and charge. Very site A-oriented and not too much variety, hell of a thing to watch though.

de_dust2 is the most popular counter-strike map and it's been played millions of times and discussed even more. By now, everyone understands the basics of the map but whenever you play in Match-Making, it's possible to encounter newbies and pros alike who don't know how to effectively use smoke grenades to block a sniper. I have seen it happen far too many times, where the Terrorists have an AWPer in the pit who is watching the bomb and the Counter-Terrorists have no smokes to cover their position to defuse the bomb on site A. I've also seen Terrorists who can't properly smoke out AWPers on site B or CT spawn.
BUT NO MORE! Now everyone will be able to know the right places to smoke and to watch for snipers.
CT Sniper Positions
When you're CT and looking for a sniping spot, the most common places are the boxes on site B, middle to watch the doors (don't get picked), and corner on long A watching the doors. If you're not fast enough to get to any of those spots, there is a good chance you will get picked. Most of these sniper positions are also good for rifles to watch for the T side to move in.
T Smokes On CT Sniper Positions
When you're on the T side, you almost always have to smoke the middle. Usually on long A, you'll have to wait a second for the CT side to throw a grenade but they might also have a sniper as you can see on the map below. If the AWPer is preventing you from pushing on A and the CTs are closing in from the middle or they've wiped out your guys pushing on site B, you're going to need to smoke out the long A doors on the inside or bounce the smoke off the blue box just outside the doors. When the smoke pops, the AWPer will have to move around the smoke so you should be able to fire blind through the smoke and clip them or throw a grenade and clip them that way. It forces a partial retreat on the part of the AWPer so they either pull back to site A or jump into the pit.
T Sniper Positions
There isn't much to say about the T sniping spots, you're only going to have them once you push up hard on site A, on site B you can snipe as far as a rifle can.
CT Smokes on T Sniper Positions
Countless times there will be an AWPer on long A watching the site from the pit, either to push ahead or to defend the planted bomb. No one seems to know what to do in that situation. If you have two CTs left, you can push the AWPer but you must absolutely have a smoke grenade.
Team Dignitas posted a guide on how to improve your aim. Check it out here.
Death match practice with a goal of X amount of headshots works pretty well. Usually we do a few practice rounds before getting into competitive match making. It helps because you can focus on getting lots of kills or focus on just your aim. Training only your AK or M4 skills is great to do in death match.
They also recommend doing offline with bots mode, with the bots set to harmless/easy. Bots running around can help you aim at a moving target, like the double doors with an AWP on de_dust2.
